How to Block Countries, IPs, and Bots on Shopify
Actionable, tested steps — plus the Shopify apps that make it faster, with honest notes on pricing and fit.
Shopify has no built-in way to block visitors by country or IP — shipping zones only stop checkout, not bots or fake orders. To actually block traffic, install a blocking app like Securify (4.5 stars): pick the countries or IP addresses to block, enable bot and VPN protection, and whitelist yourself. Pair it with checkout OTP verification if fake or COD orders are the real problem.
Why stores block countries and IPs
Not all traffic is good traffic. Stores usually reach for blocking when one of three things is happening: fake orders (often cash-on-delivery orders that never get accepted), bot traffic from data centers that eats ad retargeting budgets and skews analytics, or content scrapers lifting product photos and copy wholesale. If you only sell to a handful of countries, traffic from everywhere else is cost without revenue — every retargeting impression served to a bot in a country you don’t ship to is wasted spend.
There’s also the fraud angle: chargebacks and fraudulent orders cluster heavily by origin. If your fraud reports keep showing the same regions you never sell to, cutting them off at the door is simpler than fighting each order after the fact. (If chargebacks are your bigger problem, our chargeback prevention guide covers that side.)
What Shopify can and can’t do natively
This surprises most store owners: Shopify has no native visitor blocking. Here’s what the platform actually gives you:
- Shipping zones stop people in unsupported countries from completing checkout — but they can still browse, add to cart, click your ads, and scrape your content.
- Shopify Markets controls which countries you sell and show prices to — again, it doesn’t stop anyone from visiting.
- Fraud analysis flags risky orders after they’re placed — useful, but reactive.
So if the goal is keeping unwanted visitors out — not just stopping their checkout — you need an app that filters traffic at the storefront level.
Step-by-step: blocking with an app
We use Securify ‑ Block IP & Country for this (4.5 stars, 51 reviews — here’s our full Securify review). The setup takes about ten minutes:
- 1. Decide what you’re blocking and why. Pull up Shopify Analytics and your fraud history. Countries with sessions but zero legitimate orders, or clusters of fake orders, are your candidates.
- 2. Block by country. Select the countries in the app; visitors from them see a block page instead of your store.
- 3. Block specific IPs. For repeat offenders (a scraper, a serial fake-orderer), add their IP addresses directly — you can find them in the order details or your traffic logs.
- 4. Enable bot and proxy protection. Data-center traffic (the source of most scraping and click fraud) can be filtered separately from residential visitors.
- 5. Whitelist yourself and your tools. Add your own IPs and any services that legitimately need access, so you don’t lock out your team or your apps.
- 6. Test from a VPN. Set your VPN to a blocked country and confirm you see the block page — then set it to an allowed country and confirm normal browsing.
The second layer: verify orders, not just visitors
Country blocking stops the obvious cases, but fake orders also come from inside the countries you serve — especially cash-on-delivery orders placed with throwaway details. That’s where checkout verification earns its keep: OTP+ adds a one-time-password step (SMS or WhatsApp) at checkout, so every order is tied to a real, reachable phone number. Fake orders and return-to-origin losses drop because the person placing the order has to prove they exist. We cover it in our OTP+ review.
What not to block
- Search engine crawlers. A blocking app should never touch Googlebot or Bingbot — verify crawlers are excluded, or your rankings will pay for it.
- Whole countries you might sell to later. Blocking is easy to undo, but remember you did it — a country block from two years ago is a classic “why are we getting no EU traffic?” mystery.
- All VPN users by default. Plenty of privacy-conscious legitimate shoppers browse through VPNs. Block VPNs only if your fraud pattern clearly points there.
Measuring whether it worked
Give it two to four weeks, then check three numbers: fake or fraud-flagged orders (should drop immediately if you blocked the right regions), retargeting spend efficiency (bot clicks stop feeding your audiences), and support noise from junk enquiries. Blocking is one of the rare changes where the effect is visible within days.

Frequently asked questions
Can Shopify block a country without an app?
Not really. Shipping zones and Shopify Markets stop people from buying, but they can still browse, click ads, and scrape content. Actual visitor blocking by country or IP requires an app like Securify.
Will blocking countries hurt my SEO?
Not if it’s done right. A proper blocking app excludes search engine crawlers like Googlebot, so your rankings are unaffected. What you should never do is block the country your target audience or Google’s crawlers operate from.
Can I block VPN and proxy traffic?
Yes — data-center and proxy traffic can be filtered separately from normal visitors. Just be deliberate: some legitimate shoppers use VPNs, so enable this when your fraud or bot pattern justifies it.
What about fake orders from countries I actually sell to?
Country blocking can’t help there — you need order verification instead. A checkout OTP app like OTP+ ties every order to a working phone number, which cuts fake and cash-on-delivery orders dramatically.
Will blocked visitors know they’re blocked?
They see a block page instead of your store. Determined individuals can rotate IPs or VPNs, but blocking removes the low-effort bulk — bots, scrapers, and casual bad actors — which is where the damage concentrates.
