Social Bar: Social Media Icons (listed as B:Instagram Social Media Icons) adds a sticky bar of social media icons to a Shopify storefront, supporting over 80 platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Discord and Etsy, plus social share icons. Icons come in round or square shapes with an optional attention animation, can be hidden by the visitor with a click, and can be hidden on mobile. It holds a 4.7 rating from 39 reviews with the Built for Shopify badge. One paid plan at $4.99 a month or $41.88 a year; the free tier is development and partner stores only.

🎯
Our Verdict

It is worth separating the two things this app does, because they pull in opposite directions. Share icons let a customer send your product to someone else, that brings people in, and it is straightforwardly good. Follow icons send your visitor to your Instagram profile, which takes them out of a shop where they might have bought something and into an infinite feed engineered to keep them there. The second is a real cost, and it is one most stores never measure.

That does not make follow links wrong; it makes them a trade you should make deliberately. If your social presence is where your brand actually lives, and where returning customers get told about drops and restocks, then converting a browser into a follower has genuine long-term value that a single session does not capture. If your Instagram is three posts from last year, you are paying $4.99 a month for an exit door. Look honestly at which you have before installing.

The app itself is well built for the job. Eighty-plus platforms is comprehensive enough to cover Discord and Etsy alongside the obvious ones, the visitor can dismiss the bar with a click, and it can be hidden on mobile, which is the setting we would reach for first, since a sticky bar on a small screen competes with the add-to-cart button for the most valuable real estate you have. The review base is only 39, modest for a six-year-old app, so the track record is thinner than the rating alone suggests. The “dance animation” that draws attention to the icons is the one feature we would leave off: you generally do not want a moving element competing for attention with your product.

01

What Social Bar actually does

The app places a sticky bar of icons on the storefront, linking to your profiles across more than eighty platforms, the mainstream ones, plus community and marketplace destinations like Discord and Etsy that a lot of competing apps omit. It also provides social share icons, which is the outward-facing half of the feature: letting a customer send a product to a friend rather than letting them leave to browse a feed.

Presentation is configurable in the ways that matter. Icons can be round or square, positioned around the storefront, and given an attention animation. More usefully, the bar can be dismissed by the visitor with a single click, and it can be hidden entirely on the mobile version of the store. That last setting is the one to think hardest about: mobile screens have very little room, and a persistent overlay competes directly with the buttons that make you money.

Pros & cons

✓ Pros
  • Over 80 platforms supported, including Discord and Etsy which many competing apps skip
  • Visitors can dismiss the bar with one click, which defuses the main annoyance of sticky overlays
  • Can be hidden on mobile, where screen space is scarcest and the trade-off is worst
  • Includes share icons as well as follow icons, the half that brings people in rather than sending them out
  • Round and square shapes with positioning control, so it can be made unobtrusive
✗ Cons
  • Every follow-icon click sends a potential customer away from your shop into an infinite feed
  • Only 39 reviews after six years, a thin track record relative to this developer’s bigger titles
  • The attention-grabbing “dance animation” competes with your product for the visitor’s eye
  • $4.99 a month for links that most themes can already add for free in the footer
  • The free plan is development and partner stores only

Before you spend trial time

  • 1Look at your own social accounts first: if they are dormant, this is an exit door with a monthly fee
  • 2Turn the dance animation off, movement competes with your product photography
  • 3Seriously consider hiding the bar on mobile, where it contests space with add-to-cart
  • 4Check the bar does not overlap the cart drawer or sticky checkout bar on a real phone
  • 5Prefer share icons over follow icons on product pages, and follow icons on the homepage
  • 6Compare against your theme’s built-in footer social links, which are usually free

Current Plans & Trials

Plans (verify on the listing): One paid plan at $4.99/mo, or $41.88/year, roughly a 30% saving. It covers 80+ social media icons, a Follow Us bar for any platform, the attention animation, round and square icon shapes, click-to-hide for visitors and the option to hide on mobile. 7-day free trial. The “Free plan available” badge on the App Store listing is doing some work here. The free tier is labelled “Development Stores” and is restricted to development and partner stores only, it is a way for agencies to build and demo, not a way for a live shop to run the app for nothing. If you have a real store with real customers, your price starts at the first paid tier. Worth checking first whether your theme already offers footer social links, which many do at no cost.

Closing take

This is a capable, cheap app for a job that deserves more thought than it usually gets. The breadth of platforms is good, the dismissal and mobile-hide options show the developer understands the objection, and at five dollars a month the cost is not the issue.

The issue is intent. Social icons are not free, they are paid for in sessions that end on someone else’s platform. Install them if your social presence earns that traffic back, place them where they help rather than where they interrupt, and check your theme footer before paying for something you may already have.

Frequently asked questions

How many platforms does it support?

More than 80, including Facebook, Instagram, Discord and Etsy alongside the mainstream networks, broader than most competing icon apps.

Can visitors hide the bar?

Yes, with a single click. You can also hide the bar entirely on the mobile version of the store, which is worth doing given how little screen space a phone has.

Do social icons hurt conversion?

Follow links can, because they send a visitor from your shop into a feed designed to hold their attention. Share icons work the other way, bringing new people in. Consider using share icons on product pages and follow icons on the homepage.

How much does it cost?

$4.99 a month, or $41.88 a year for about a 30% saving, with a 7-day free trial. The free plan is limited to development and partner stores.

Does my theme already do this?

Very possibly. Most modern Shopify themes include social links in the footer at no cost. This app earns its fee through the sticky bar, the breadth of platforms and the styling controls, so check what you already have first.

Why does it have only 39 reviews?

It is a smaller title in this developer’s catalogue. The 4.7 rating is good, but 39 reviews after six years is a thinner track record than the several hundred behind their better-known apps.
